The wastewater treatment plant operated by the Lakewood Wastewater Authority (LWA) has recently experienced the release of odors from the facility. The source of the odors has been isolated to one of the treatment ponds that was modified to manage peak flows received at the plant during the summer season. The LWA has installed aeration equipment in this pond to help control the release of nuisance odors. LWA has purchased and is awaiting the delivery of additional aeration equipment to improve odor control at the identified source. We anticipate that this equipment will arrive within the next two weeks and will be installed as quickly as possible after receipt.
Along with the installation of the additional aeration equipment, the LWA has modified operational practices to help reduce odor generation. Treated wastewater held in other ponds at the plant, is now being directed through the pond generating the odors to further reduce odor causing conditions. All wastewater at the plant is ultimately processed through the recently upgraded treatment plant prior to discharge and discharge permit requirements are consistently being met.
The LWA is actively working to address the conditions which are causing the nuisance odors at the plant. We anticipate these conditions to be resolved within the next few weeks and greatly appreciate your patience as we continue to upgrade the plant for the benefit of the community.
